Food around the World: Foods to Travel to the Other Side of the World For

There are some foods that just don’t taste the same here at home no matter how many restaurants I try them in. Here is a list of food around the world that I would travel to the other side of the world for:

Fish and Chips: I have written at length before about my intense love for this across the pond food staple.  Soul satisfying comfort food at its very best, a good plate of fish and chips just makes me feel happy and fulfilled.  Maybe it is because it brings back memories of sitting in the pub with family and friends, sharing some good food and good spirits.

This is one of my favorite varieties of food around the world…the things that make me drool and long for England.

I hold firm in my belief that haddock, not cod, makes the best fish and chips and that a good plate of fish and chips should make you feel undeniably full and at peace with the world.

I have been searching far and wide for fish and chips here at home that are good enough to take me back to my time in the pubs in the UK, but I have only had moderate success, so this remains high on my list of foods that I long for on a regular basis.

French wine, cheese and baguettes:  The French have discovered a secret that can’t really be explained in words.

Taken individually, each of the following foods is lovely and satisfying in its own right, but when combined (ideally in a complimentary environment such as a picnic in one of the lovely parks in Paris) you have a unique French culinary experience that you will remember and salivate about long after you have returned home {wiping drool off keyboard…}.

The simplicity of this combination is deceiving.

The key players of this production: a well made baguette (crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, preferably fresh and warm from the oven), savory cheese and a bottle of French wine (it doesn’t matter if it is an expensive bottle or a cheap one, even the cheapest French wine is better than a moderate to expensive bottle of wine here in the US).

When combined on the stage of your tongue, they create a synergy that becomes more than the sum of its seemingly simple parts and suddenly you notice that everything is right with the world.

If you have had the aforementioned foods together during a picnic in France, you now exactly what I am talking about.  The rest of you think I am slightly crazy, so I guess you will just have to wait and see for yourself!

Mango Sticky Rice:

If someone had told me before I visited Thailand that a dish containing the unusual combination of mangoes and rice would become one of my new favorite foods, I would have scoffed and told them that they were a couple slices short of a loaf.  Honestly, if there are two foods that just sound wrong together to me, these are it.  I was in for a big surprise.

Thailand Mango Sticky Rice

First of all, I discovered that mangoes taste completely different when they are fresh and haven’t been shipped thousands of miles to my grocery store.  Fresh mangoes are much more sweet than their grocery store counterparts.

Second surprise was that despite the fact that I hate coconuts, the coconut milk that is the secret ingredient that makes mango and sticky rice so wonderful is sweet and creamy and not coconuty tasting at all.

Put this all together with some sticky rice (a kind of rice whose fibers are more glutinous than the normal rice that you are probably used to) in any night market in Thailand and you have a cheap slice of heaven in a bowl.

The warm, sweet tasting rice combining with the cool mangoes with a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk over the top just makes my inner child happy.

Still skeptical?  I don’t blame you (and eating mangoes and sticky rice at most Thai restaurants here in the US won’t help…it just doesn’t taste the same when the ingredients aren’t fresh).  When you find yourself in a night market in Thailand and you get to try it for yourself, you will understand.

    My travel-for food is Belgian waffles. I don’t care how hard other places try, they’re just not the same unless you’re buying them from a window in Belgium.

    When I studied abroad in France, I would always get some brie and a fresh baguette to celebrate a good grade. I miss that so much!

      The brie in France is AMAZING! And I can never get over how much cheaper it is there (you can spend 5 euros on a wheel of brie that would cost you $20 in the US!)

    You are so right — trying to duplicate the food and recipes from abroad once back home is NEVER as good as the original. That’s one of the reasons I keep traveling…to keep trying new (and yes, skeptical sounding and/or looking) foods 🙂

    I feel the same way about fondue in Switzerland and hummus in Jordan. Somehow, they just don’t taste as good as having them in their respective countries!

      I have never been crazy about fondue, but fondue in Switzerland? That might be a different thing entirely…yum!

      Yup…drooling thinking of it right now…it is so much different when it is made with fresh mangoes and fresh coconut milk…
